Abstract:

Based on the framework of appraisal theory, this study aims to explore the cognitive evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and its impact on cultural dissemination in Spanish-speaking countries and regions by conducting keyword searches in the Spanish Royal Academy's 21st-Century Corpus of Spanish (CORPES XXI). In addition to employing a corpus-driven data approach, this study adopts a mixed research method, using the subsystems of appraisal theory (attitudinal system, engagement system, and graduation system) to conduct qualitative analysis on representative text fragments, and finally carries out an overall quantitative analysis on all extracted corpus data. The research findings show that the attitude and evaluation of the Spanish-speaking world towards TCM are mainly positive, but there are significant differences in the attention paid to different branches of TCM. Acupuncture and herbal pharmacology show a high-frequency attention trend in the corpus, while dimensions such as Tai Chi, Tuina, and dietary health preservation are relatively marginalized. The acceptance of TCM varies significantly across different Spanish-speaking regions. Mexico-Central America-Caribbean region constitutes the core area with high recognition of TCM. Spain presents a contradictory cognitive structure with polarized evaluations, while in the Andean region and among the Hispanic communities in the United States, there is a gradual attenuation of cultural penetration, and the relative scarcity of corpus also reflects the insufficient dissemination effectiveness.
